Week-by-Week Pregnancy Journey: What Happens Each Trimester
Pregnancy is an incredible journey filled with milestones, surprises, and life-changing moments. Whether you’re a first-time mom or expanding your family, understanding the week-by-week pregnancy changes can help you feel more prepared and connected to your growing baby.
At e-Pregnant, we’ve created this trimester-by-trimester guide to help you follow along with your baby’s development and your body’s amazing transformation.
First Trimester: Weeks 1–12
The first trimester is all about beginnings. From the moment of conception, your body starts working hard to support new life. While you may not look pregnant yet, there’s a lot happening inside!
Weeks 1–4: Conception and Implantation
Technically, pregnancy begins with the first day of your last menstrual period. Ovulation typically happens around week 2, and fertilization shortly after. By week 4, the fertilized egg implants in the uterus.
Common early signs include:
- Missed period
- Breast tenderness
- Mild cramping or spotting (implantation bleeding)

Weeks 5–8: Embryo Development
By week 5, your baby is the size of a sesame seed! Major organs begin to form, and your heart is pumping extra blood to support your growing uterus.
You might experience:
- Morning sickness
- Increased fatigue
- Heightened sense of smell
Tip: Start prenatal vitamins early to support development.
Weeks 9–12: From Embryo to Fetus
Your baby graduates from embryo to fetus around week 10. Tiny fingers, toes, and facial features begin to appear!
Your body is adjusting too, so don’t be surprised by mood swings or frequent bathroom visits.
Second Trimester: Weeks 13–26
Many moms-to-be call the second trimester the “honeymoon phase” of pregnancy. Morning sickness usually eases, and you’ll start to feel your energy returning.
Weeks 13–16: Hello Baby Bump!
Your baby is growing rapidly — by week 16, they’re about the size of an avocado. Organs continue to mature, and you may see your bump starting to show.

Weeks 17–20: Feeling Those First Kicks
Exciting milestone: you might feel your baby’s first gentle flutters, known as “quickening.” Ultrasounds around this time can reveal your baby’s sex (if you choose to find out).
Fun fact: Baby can hear sounds now — try talking or playing music!
Weeks 21–26: Growth Spurt Ahead
Your baby is gaining weight and practicing movements. You may notice stronger kicks and rolls, along with changes to your skin and posture.

Third Trimester: Weeks 27–40
The final stretch! Your baby is busy preparing for life outside the womb while you get ready for the big day.
Weeks 27–32: Final Growth Push
Baby’s brain is developing rapidly, and they’re starting to open and close their eyes. You might experience Braxton Hicks contractions (practice contractions).
Tip: Stay hydrated and practice relaxation techniques.
Weeks 33–36: Getting Ready for Birth
Your baby is settling into a head-down position in preparation for delivery. You may feel increased pressure in your pelvis and frequent trips to the bathroom.
Start final preparations: pack your hospital bag and discuss your birth plan with your healthcare provider.
Weeks 37–40: Full Term!
Your baby is officially full term by week 37. Any day now, you’ll meet your little one!
Watch for signs of labor, such as:
- Regular contractions
- Water breaking
- Loss of the mucus plug
